The Numbers

The macrodata itself — clusters that make refiners feel dread, and are "the building blocks of a mind".

Updated through S2E10

The "numbers" are the raw material of macrodata refinement: shifting grids on a green CRT that provoke emotion in the refiner. Cobel tells Mark they are the building blocks of a severed consciousness — pieces of Gemma's mind, sorted by feeling.

What's confirmed in canon
S1Refiners describe number clusters as "scary" and box them by feeling, without knowing why.
S2E10Cobel: the numbers are the building blocks of a mind; Cold Harbor is the last file needed to complete Gemma's severance.
Where the community lands

The single biggest reframe of the series. If the numbers are fragments of a person's psyche sorted by temper, then refinement is the literal construction of severed states — and every "scary" cluster a refiner boxes is a piece of someone's trauma.
