John Turturro plays Irving B., MDR's most senior and most Lumon-loyal refiner, who falls in love with Burt from Optics & Design. His outie is a haunted former sailor who has painted the same black Lumon hallway hundreds of times and is quietly building a case against the company.

Where the community lands

Irving is the believer whose faith curdles into resistance. His outie already knows something is deeply wrong; his innie's love for Burt gives Lumon a lever to break him. By Season 2's end the company has separated them, and Irving is put on a train out of the story — pointedly not killed, leaving his outie's investigation live.
