The Overtime Contingency

A Lumon override that switches an innie on in the outside world — the S1 finale's weapon.

Updated through S1E10

The Overtime Contingency (OTC) is a rarely-used protocol that activates a person's innie consciousness outside the severed floor. In the Season 1 finale, the MDR innies use a hacked version to wake in their outies' lives for a few desperate minutes and tell the world what's happening.

What's confirmed in canon
S1E9Dylan works the security desk to hold the OTC active while Mark, Helly and Irving wake in the outside world.
S1E10The innies use their stolen minutes to expose Lumon before the contingency is cut off.
Where the community lands

The OTC shatters the illusion that severance stays at the office. Fans treat it as proof Lumon can reach innies anywhere — and a template for how the company might weaponize severed people in the outside world.
