The Overtime Contingency (OTC) is a rarely-used protocol that activates a person's innie consciousness outside the severed floor. In the Season 1 finale, the MDR innies use a hacked version to wake in their outies' lives for a few desperate minutes and tell the world what's happening.

S1E9Dylan works the security desk to hold the OTC active while Mark, Helly and Irving wake in the outside world.

S1E10The innies use their stolen minutes to expose Lumon before the contingency is cut off.
