The Severance Procedure
Lumon's brain implant that splits a person into an "innie" (work self) and "outie" (home self).
Severance is a surgical chip that bisects a person's consciousness by location: cross onto the severed floor and the "innie" takes over with no memory of the outside; leave and the "outie" returns with no memory of work. Lumon markets it as work-life balance; the show reveals it as a tool of control, imprisonment and worse.
The central engine of the show. Season 2 reveals the procedure can be pushed far past "work-life balance" — dozens of severed states in one person (Gemma), triggered remotely (the Overtime Contingency), and reversed only at great risk (reintegration).
