Dichen Lachman plays Gemma Scout, Mark's wife. Believed killed in a car crash, she is in fact imprisoned on Lumon's secret testing floor, where she has been severed into dozens of separate innie states — one per room — and studied. On the severed floor above she appeared as the wellness counsellor "Ms. Casey".

What's confirmed in canon

S1Appears on the severed floor as "Ms. Casey", a placid wellness counsellor with no memory of an outside life.

S2E7"Chikhai Bardo": Gemma's captivity on the testing floor is revealed — each numbered room a separate severed self undergoing a trauma test.

S2E10Sent into the Cold Harbor room to dismantle the crib she and Mark planned for their baby, she feels nothing — the ultimate severance. Mark frees her, but the chip reactivates as they cross onto the severed floor.

Where the community lands

Gemma is Lumon's proof of concept: if severance can cut a person off from even their deepest trauma (Cold Harbor), the company believes it has won its "war against pain". Freed in the finale but trapped again by the reactivating chip, she is the key the whole endgame turns on.
