For two seasons, macrodata refiners boxed 'scary' number clusters by feeling, with no idea why. The S2 finale reframes it: the numbers are the building blocks of a severed mind — pieces of Gemma's consciousness, sorted by emotion, and Mark's 'Cold Harbor' file completes her.

The severed floor's placid wellness counsellor turns out to be Mark's wife Gemma — not dead in a car crash, but imprisoned by Lumon and severed into many selves on a hidden testing floor.

Cold Harbor is named all season as the crucial file and the goal of Gemma's testing. The finale reveals it's the ultimate severance test — cutting a person off even from their deepest trauma.

Lumon presents severance as a founder-blessed company breakthrough. 'Sweet Vitriol' reveals the procedure was invented by Harmony Cobel — the credit and the notebook stolen by the company.

A hidden department, Mammalians Nurturable, raises goats in an indoor pasture. The finale cracks the door: a goat is to be sacrificed and entombed with Gemma to guide her spirit to 'sit with Kier' — but the full purpose is still open.

Below the severed floor lies a second, secret level where Lumon severs a single person into dozens of selves — one per numbered room — and subjects each to a different trauma test.

The Perpetuity Wing, the goat ritual, and Jame seeing Kier 'reborn' in Helena all point at a goal bigger than any product: conquering death and perpetuating the founder himself. The show has seeded it heavily but not confirmed it.

Lumon insists reversing severance is impossible and fatal — Petey died of the 'reintegration sickness'. But the fugitive surgeon Reghabi reintegrates Mark, who survives, suggesting the company hid that it works.

Lumon is ruled by an unseen Board that issues its will through the severed spokesperson Natalie — whose 'flicker' implies she's used as a mouthpiece who may not remember the message. The Board's identity is unknown.

Lumon installs a preteen, Miss Huang, as Deputy Manager, who says she's completing a 'wintering-over'. It implies a pipeline that raises children into the company — evidence Lumon is a multi-generational cult.

After Mark's outie frees Gemma, the chip reactivates on the severed floor and innie Mark runs off with Helly — abandoning the wife he doesn't know. It crystallises the innie/outie war reintegration set off.

Lumon lore states Kier had a twin brother, Dieter Eagan, who accompanied him everywhere. In a company obsessed with perpetuating its founder, a hidden twin invites speculation about what — or who — Lumon is really preserving.
