Adam Scott plays Mark Scout. His outie is a former history professor who severed after his wife Gemma was declared dead in a car crash, taking a job at Lumon so that for eight hours a day an "innie" version of him feels nothing. Innie Mark is promoted to lead the four-person MDR team. Reintegration (illegally reversing severance, via Reghabi) blurs the wall between his two selves across Season 2.

S1E9The Overtime Contingency wakes the innies in the outside world; Mark realizes the woman he thought dead — Ms. Casey — is his wife Gemma.

S2E1Coaxed back to Lumon on new terms, Mark negotiates for the return of his old team.

S2E7Reintegration accelerates; the testing floor and Gemma's captivity move to the centre of Mark's story.

S2E10Outie Mark soaks his tie in Drummond's blood to bypass the biometric locks and frees Gemma from the Cold Harbor room — but on the severed floor the chip flips and innie Mark runs off with Helly, leaving Gemma screaming behind a door.

Where the community lands

Mark is the fault line the whole show runs along: the only refiner secretly reintegrating, and the husband of the woman Lumon is testing on the floor below. The S2 finale forced the split into open war — outie Mark frees Gemma, but when the chip reactivates innie Mark chooses to stay on the severed floor with Helly, abandoning the crying wife he doesn't know.
