Of all humanity, exactly thirteen people are immune to the Joining, scattered across the globe: Carol in Albuquerque, Manousos in Paraguay, Koumba in Mauritania, Laxmi in India, Kusimayu in Peru, and others. They share nothing obvious — not nation, faith, health, or temperament.
