Carol Sturka

Character

Romantasy novelist and "the most miserable person on Earth" — one of thirteen immune to the Joining.

Updated through S1E9

Rhea Seehorn plays Carol Sturka, a successful but deeply unhappy romance-fantasy novelist. When an alien signal turns the rest of humanity into a single blissful collective, Carol is one of only thirteen people left unaffected. Her misery is, in a sense, what makes her herself — and she is determined to reverse the Joining and get the world back.

What's confirmed in canon
S1E1The Joining hits; Carol's wife Helen dies as Carol rushes her to the hospital, and Carol wakes into a world made of the Others.
S1Carol resists assimilation, is chaperoned by the Other Zosia, and makes contact with other immune people around the world.
S1E9After a getaway with Zosia, Carol learns the Others still mean to join everyone; she sides with Manousos — "You win. We save the world" — and takes an atom bomb.
Where the community lands

Carol is the show's whole argument: the last holdout for individuality, grief, and discontent in a world that has "solved" all three. By the finale she has grieved her wife, fallen for her Other chaperone, and — swayed by Manousos — chosen to fight, carrying an atom bomb home. Whether she can save the world without becoming a monster (or joining it) is the open question.

Still open
Q1Will Carol use the bomb — and on what?
Q2Can she reverse the Joining, or only destroy the Others?
Q3Does she hold out, or eventually join?
