Carol's immunity is the show's engine. The case gathers the reads that misery is her shield, that she, not the virus, killed Helen, and whether she inevitably joins the hive before the end.

The event that joined the world started with a signal. The case weighs whether it was aimed rather than accidental, whether the number thirteen is meaningful, and whether the Others will stop before everyone is joined.

Can the Joining be reversed, or is it one way?

The Others promise peace, but joining may be a door that only opens one way. The case gathers the evidence that no one has come back, that the Joining switches off culture itself, and that the gas may not need consent.
