The Wilderness ("It")

The force the survivors believe lives in the woods — real presence, or the name they gave their own hunger.

Updated through S3E10

"The Wilderness," which some characters simply call "It," is the show's central ambiguity: an apparent intelligence in the forest that answers rituals, sends signs, and "chooses" who lives and dies. The series has always kept both readings — the supernatural and the psychological — alive at once.

What's confirmed in canon
S1–S3The group increasingly attributes agency to the wilderness, building rituals around "what It wants."
S3E10Akilah is revealed to have staged a "sign" by poisoning the animals — a data point for the skeptics.
Where the community lands

Everything hinges on whether "It" is real. Lottie's visions, Van's survivals, Javi's cave, and the hunts all read as evidence — but S3 also shows Akilah manufacturing a "sign," and the group choosing to believe. The final season is positioned to answer, or to refuse to.
