The Man in Yellow is the show's load.bearing villain and as of Season 4, also its biggest active mystery. He is not a fixed person. He is a shapeshifter who picks vessels, and the talismans the residents call monster wards are wards against him specifically. The Sophia reveal in S4 resolved one question and opened a bigger one: what is he beneath the costume?
Revealed in the finale to be Sophia: the Man in Yellow spent the season wearing the newcomer's face. In S4E10 he strips the town of every protective talisman and drops them down the Faraway Tree, and kills Elgin for refusing his bargain. The Boy in White warns him he is 'going to lose this time' now that Tabitha and Jade hold the bones.
What he is remains the show's biggest open question. Leading reads: an exiled entity, a founder who won the bargain, or the architect of Fromville.
