For most of the show's run the BIW has been treated as the residents' helpful but cryptic guide. Season 4 has destabilized that read. The growing position is that the BIW's help has consistently kept the cycle running rather than broken it, and that he may be either complicit or structurally prevented from speaking plainly.

Father Khatri's ghost drove Boyd to take a jackhammer to the basement wall and find Jade's door. Boyd asked Khatri whether nightmares turn into real monsters; Khatri said maybe. The most direct in-show endorsement of any fan theory to date.
